Bahamian acting and singing sensation Johnathan Farrington is gracing stages all over the world and making us proud!
If you thought he could only wow you with his voice, he did a thing recently that put us on to his acting chops. He was recently cast in an off-broadway version of one of the greatest plays of American theatre, “A Raisin in the Sun,” in New York.
Johnathan was cast as Jospeh Asagai the Nigerian love interest of Beneatha Younger and for him, it was a dream come true.
“This opportunity is particularly special to me for several reasons. It’s my first equity show. Since graduation, I have been auditioning and working non-stop with the goal of getting my equity card and it finally happened. Manifestation! Bahamian icon and one of my biggest inspirations Sidney Poitier played the lead role in the original broadway cast and live film version. I remember watching it and saying, ‘boy I would love to act in this play someday.'”
Well, Johnathan’s “someday” finally arrived and he got to act in the play he’d watch since he was a kid.
A Raisin in the Sun is the story of a lower-class African American family living on the Southside of Chicago during the 1950s. The family seeks to move into a home in a White middle-class neighbourhood, and the play takes on racial and economic tensions head on.
“This story is very timely and touching and reminds me of how one who does not have much will fight for their dreams. These characters are so complex and full and all are fighting for something. This story moves you to so many levels. Lorraine Hansberry wrote a wonder and I’m just honestly so grateful to have shared this timely story with the world.”
We’re keeping our eyes peeled to see what stage Johnathan lands on next!
