More silly than the Twitter trolls who came for Bahamians Saturday night after Buddy Hield and the Oklahoma Sooners lost to Villanova in the NCAA Final Four round, were the Bahamians who came for Bahamians who wanted to “claim” the mega star!
Yes, he’s from Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama. Yes, he’s faced some challenges in his hometown that some other Bahamians may not know of. Yes, other Bahamians face challenges that others on other islands don’t know of. Yes, he’s Grand Bahamian…but more so than that…
He’s Bahamian!
…And for that, every Bahamian has a right, a stake and claim to Buddy Hield. The mere fact that he grew up in the nation’s second city and not through a corner in Bain Town; or the fact the didn’t grow up swimming down in the blue holes in Long Island, or the fact that he didn’t grow up climbing the lighthouse in Abaco…HE IS BAHAMIAN!
Some Bahamians have actually dedicated full Facebook posts to telling other Bahamians who aren’t from Grand Bahama to ease up on claiming Buddy.
One post in particular got a lot of backlash!
At a time when Bahamians are filled with so much pride, unity and support, why would any one seek to ruin this moment?!
Well, the author of this post didn’t get as far as they thought they would have as these very same prideful Bahamians from Nassau, Abaco, Eleuthera and Exuma came to snatch edges!
