With all the back and forth in the public sphere about the validity of Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival, we here at eLIFE 242 Magazine have found our golden goose in the whole process.
Now every year the Bahamas Carnival Commission launches the carnival season with the Music Masters competition where it encourages artists all across The Bahamas to submit music to be judged in order to win the $20,000 prize and a chance to be declared the Music Master!
Now it may seem like a very basic schema, but truthfully this process has great value. Although only 20 songs (which is a lot per capita) are chosen to be in the finals, let’s think about the hundreds of songs created to be submitted and the musical gold mine it adds to the Bahamian music vault.
The arts are one of the most under appreciated aspects of Bahamian culture (minus Junkanoo) and I think we (the arts centric community) should embrace if only this part of Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival.
The past two years have shown how the competition has already caused the quality in writing and production of music locally to rise and in the coming years we hope to see more new artist emerging onto the scene.
Check out some of the songs in the finals of this year’s Music Masters Competition.
