Grab your Bahamian flags, that bag of cheddar popcorn and get ready to root for some homegrown 242 talent!
Bahamian pop and R&B singing sensation Tebby, will make her debut tonight (Tuesday May 28) on the new NBC song competition show “Songland” and once again, it’s #242ToTheWorld on the international stage!
Tebby has blessed us with the summer bop “Feel Alright” and the sexy single “Medicine” (featuring Jeremih), but now the singer begins her journey as a contestant on what’s expected to be a hit show.
Unlike American Idol, The Voice and The Four that came before it and focused mainly on the singing talents of its contestants, Songland digs a little deeper, tapping into the process of songwriting and then turning that song into a hit single.
eLIFE242 caught up with Tebby just ahead of tonight’s premiere.
“I first heard about Songland three years ago when they had just gotten the green light for a pilot episode,” Tebby explains. “I submitted a song then, but didn’t make it, so, when the show was confirmed for a full season, I submitted a new song and got selected.”
Tebby, who admits that she feels the most alive when she is singing, says that she has always known, ever since she was a little girl, that she wanted to sing and perform.
“My first official single was “Settle Down” that I wrote in 2016. Sosa Man opened his studio to a few artists, so, I took that opportunity to write something and record it professionally.”
As for her time on the show, Tebby says that she felt proud to represent The Bahamas on such a global scale and encourages Bahamian artists and creatives, especially, to go after what they want and never be afraid of failure because it’s all part of the process.
Songland, which is an 11-episode series, follows up-and-coming songwriters who perform original pieces in front of a panel of three music producers Ryan Tedder, Shane McAnally and Ester Dean, as well as chart-topping artists, John Legend, Charlie Puth, Jonas Brothers, Leona Lewis, will.i.am, OneRepublic, Meghan Trainor, Kelsea Ballerini, Macklemore, Aloe Blacc and Old Dominion.
Unfortunately, our girl could not reveal the name of the song that she performs on tonight’s premiere, but that just gives us the more reason to watch.
We know The Bahamas’ very own, will blow the panel and the world away, not just with her voice, but with her songwriting, personality, beauty and island flavour!
